Sponsor Letter July 16th, 2015

Hello dear Sponsors!

Thanks to everyone who attended the last Sponsor Social.  The staff and I had a great time and I'm pretty sure everyone else did too.  If you missed it, the next one is coming up Thursday, August 20th.  After that, the Fall social will be Saturday, October 24th (costumes will be enthusiastically supported but not required), and then the first social of 2016 will be Thursday, January 28th.

Quite a few items of interest this month.

Bags for Sponsors from Rickshaw Bagworks - As I mentioned in my last note, all our sponsors can order custom messenger bags (along with several other types of bags, too) embroidered with the Borderlands sponsor logo.  And it's all thanks to our friends at Rickshaw Bagworks.  And, just in case that's not cool enough, the bags are 20% off regular price.  You can see a mockup of the logo on some bags here - http://borderlands-books.blogspot.com/p/custom-sponsor-bags-from-rickshaw.html .

Here's how it works -

1)  Go to Rickshaw's site - http://www.rickshawbags.com
2)  At the top of the page click on the word "Bags" (it's on the left, right next to their logo)
3)  Pick the sort of bag you're interested in and click on the picture.  You can choose any of the types in the top row (Commuter Laptop, Zero Messenger, iPad bag (makes a great purse), and Sutro Backpack)
3a)  If you're getting a Zero Messenger bag, choose the size (medium is the most popular; I have a large)
4)  Click on the top right picture that reads "Customize Yours".
5)  Then follow the steps to choose fabric, liner, trim and label colors plus any options (FYI, the "Borderlands Standard" bag is black fabric, XPac grey liner, and barn red trim)
6)   In order to apply your 20% discount toward your bag, you will have to enter the following discount code: <code redacted - email for code>,  into the box labeled "Promo Code" when you reach the checkout page. This promo code box is located just about in the middle of the page.  (The box is just about in the middle of the page.)
7)  IMPORTANT - to get the logo embroidered on the bag you MUST put the following text in the "Comments" box, "Please embroider with Borderlands sponsor logo." (The Comments box is in the lower left corner of the page.)  Note - the standard version of the logo is in red.  If you would prefer black, please state by putting "Please embroider with Borderlands sponsor logo in black" in the "Comments" box.

After that it's just a matter of completing the order as one usually would (i.e. mailing address, credit card number, and so forth).  Rickshaw ships world-wide, so don't worry if you're in the UK or farther afield.

As you can imagine, the bags were a huge hit at the last sponsor social (hell, some people ordered more than one) and my own bag has been just great.  As always, if you've got questions or have problems / suggestions, drop us a line at sponsors@borderlands-books.com.  Oh, and one final note -- since all these bags are custom-made, there are no returns if you don't like how the colors worked out (hot tip here -- do not choose any of the tweed patterns, they look terrible with the embroidery).  Returns are, however, totally welcome in the case of defects or mistakes.

Bag Delivery - Speaking of Borderlands Bags, if you ordered a bag at the last social, they are just about ready.  With a tiny bit of luck, I'll be going by the factory tomorrow to pick all of them up.  As soon as we've had a chance to sort through them, we'll start calling people to let them know they can come in to pick them up.  I cannot wait to see what they look like.

Borderlands-Branded Wines - At the last social, the great folks from Pat Paulson Vineyards were taking orders for Borderlands-branded wine - a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon and a crisp Chardonnay selected by us, with gorgeous labels designed by sponsor Michelle Rapp.  If you didn't get the chance to order wine then (or, if you couldn't make it to the party), you can order it from the Paulson Vineyard site: http://www.ppvwines.com/collections/borderlands-books-wines-that-benefit-your-favorite-local-bookstore . The wines are $15.99 a bottle (and there is a case quantity discount, email us if you're interested). Unfortunately, they can't be shipped -- you will have to pick them up here at the store -- but they are terrific quality, reasonably-priced wines, and in addition to getting the lovely vino, you're helping to support the store!

Sponsor Cards and Patches - We also have sponsor cards and patches ready for pick up.  The cards prove that you are a sponsor, and they look pretty nifty!  The patches are a gift from the store to help you show your pride. Just ask at the front counter for your card and patch.  For those of you who live out of town, or if you just can't get down here by the end of the month, I'll be happy to mail them to you; just send a note. Regardless, we'll be mailing the cards and patches to everyone who hasn't picked them up by the beginning of August.

Buying Used Books - Borderlands will be accepting used books for trade again, and setting up appointments to buy used books for cash, from sponsors only.  We're starting Wednesday, July 15th.  If you've got used books to trade, you can drop them off anytime we're open.  The staff will sort through them and give you a call to let you know your credit balance in a few days, and then you'll have two weeks to pick up any declined books.  If you'd like to sell books for cash, just call or email to make an appointment with Jude, 415 824-8203 or jfeldman@borderlands-books.com.  As before, if you've got a huge number of books, call or email us first to make sure we've got space.

Weekly Sponsor Cocktails - We're starting a weekly sponsor meetup on Tuesdays at a local bar, The Pilsner Inn. http://www.pilsnerinn.com/  Come and hang out in their spacious backyard and enjoy a drink with some of Borderlands' staff and your fellow sponsors.  Some combination of us will be there from 9:00 pm  - midnight every Tuesday night.  No need to RSVP and any number of guests and friends are welcome.  The address is 225 Church Street, near Market, and they are INCREDIBLY convenient to public transit -- the MUNI Metro Underground (via F,K, L, and M lines at Church Street,) and J and N lines stop less than a block away.

Watches - Would you be interested in a custom watch with our snazzy Ouroboros logo on it?  If so, we can make that happen.  Let me know what you think.

Sponsors' Open Mic night - Are you a writer who is looking for a great opportunity to read to a live, enthusiastic, and diverse audience?  At the suggestion of a sponsor, we’re considering organizing an Open Mic Night for sponsors to share their short stories or selections from a longer work.  Participation will be open to writers of all levels (as long as they are sponsors), and also open to any type of writing, in any genre.  All we ask is that you keep the reading short -- five minutes max.  Attendance will be open to anyone (so no sponsor requirement for that).  At this point, we’re looking to gauge interest among our sponsors.  If there are enough folks interested, we'll schedule the first Open Mic for (probably) early September.  Sound like fun?  If you’d like to reserve a slot for that first Sponsors' Open Mic, or if you have any questions, please send an email to Alan at abeatts@borderlands-books.com.

Satellite Event Updates - We are still working on organizing satellite sponsor events in several cities. However, amidst all the other work we're doing, it is taking us longer than expected to get those together. Rest assured I haven't forgotten; it's just going kinda slowly!
